Given the relative shallow depths in the Keys, I would imagine you could dive to inspect. I have always wondered about mooring balls in places that they are not pulled annually. One place I am looking at in New York, on the Hudson river pulls them every year. The harbor master inspects it before being dropped.

I recommend a slip for awhile & anchor out for awhile........you will find out what is best for you...........every one is different ........but swinging on the anchor is magical

$1,000 a month is more than enough for slip rent and still have a couple hundred left for booze at the city marina.

I you anchor out, there is not a lot of sheltered locations.

Re: Liveaboard in Key West?

Have there been any changes to the possibilities for a liveaboard to anchor around Key West lately? Looking into this possibility for my wife and I. Particularly the posts by Capt. Aaron contain good options it seems.

Re: Liveaboard in Key West?

The only changes I know of is the one small anchorage area in the harbor no longer is available. However, there are loads of mooring balls controlled by the city, plus the city marina that provide a great place to stay. Across the Northwest Channel, you can enter Mule Key Basin and anchor there in comfort. The basin is 5 to 7 feet deep and surrounded by shallow bars that provide excellent protection from waves in all directions as long as the winds are under 40 knots.

There are only a handful of live aboard marinas in the Florida Keys, the largest of which are city operated in Marathon and Key West. You can google them to find the current rates, which are not really that high considering you will be staying in the most expensive vacation resort in the contental United States.

Unfortunately, Captain Aaron has moved to South America and we no longer have his input. I got to meet him in person while I was in Marathon and he is a great guy, lots of experience, and loves being on the water. Sure miss him.

Hope this helps,

Gary

Re: Liveaboard in Key West?

Thanks very much for your reply Gary, that does help a lot. We're looking into building a small houseboat and would like to anchor it off Key West. I will probably start a new thread on our adventure.
