Mattituck

Anyone have current local knowledge of the controlling depth going into Mattituck Inlet? I'm looking at this as a possible stopping point while bringing my "new to me" boat down from Massachusetts to Port Washington. She draws 6 feet.

My two memories of Mattituck from the one time I went in there as a kid are (i) catching a sea robin while fishing off the pier at the marina and (ii) hitting the sand bar pretty hard on the way in. Don't really want to repeat either of those experiences.

Thanks!

Haven't been into Mattituck in quite a few years.
Why not just hug the CT side since you are coming from Mass.???
You will have a lot more options, and it is a little bit more of a direct course if you are traveling the entire length of the Sound.

6 foot sounds a bit too deep for mattituck, it can get narrow in there and you would just be better off going to CT or stopping in orient and then making a run to Port jeff from there or farther which can easily be done.

Mattituck CAN be done carefully! There is a 5 foot tide and a 5 foot depth.

Thanks. The Embassy Guide mentions 4 to 6 feet reported depth with shoaling that can occur at the entrance. This was sufficiently vague for me to wonder if it can get even shallower than 4 feet.

I've been in there a bunch of times, all with boats drawing more than 5 feet (though 5'7" is the most). There's enough water. There is a bar all the way in the basin in front of Mat-a-Mar Marina, but you can navigate around both sides of it.

That said, Mattituck is not a place I would use as a stop-over. You're talking the better part of an hour from the entrance to a place where you can stop, and obviously the same time getting back out. If it were me, I'd choose Duck Island Roads outside of Westbrook, CT over Mattituck. For that matter, I'd choose Old Saybrook, or a host of others over Mattituck for a simple stop-over.

Thanks for the info.

Part of the appeal is that if my Mom is at home she could drive over and join us (my Dad and I) for dinner. As of now, she's probably not going to be there, though, so we may end up in CT.
