[Western Sound] Suggestions for destination

Hi All,

I'm slowly exploring exploring the western side of the sound this summer and was curious if anyone could recommend a spot for the second night of my holiday weekend (Sunday).

I'm spending Saturday Night in Huntington Bay. Plan to take in the Music Fest and then have dinner at Prime before heading off in the morning.

Where should I go? I was thinking of crossing the Sound to Stamford, any Marina recommendations there? Another destination I should target? Any happenings going on Sunday somewhere? (fireworks, concerts, etc)

My only requirement is that I'm able to get back to Stepping Stone by Monday evening.

I'm not very famiiar with all the stops on the Conn. Side. I like Port Jeff...just a short hop from Huntington bay. It's a great little town.

Moorings are inexpensive..launch service is great.....great showers in the new building.

Depends what you're looking for, but you might want to skip Stamford and head a bit further east to Norwalk -- lots to do there plus there's the Norwalk Islands to explore (anchor just north of Sheffield Is.). For a quiet anchorage, look to Ziegler's Cove or Greenwich Cove. Another suggestion, Larchmont Yacht Club -- pick up a guest mooring and walk into town (my favorite restaurant - Chat 19 - is about a 10-15 minute walk from LYC -- live jazz, great food). Continuing west, go to City Island and pick up a guest mooring at any of the yacht clubs there (I like Stuyvesant YC, but City Island YC is nice, too). Walk into town for a number of decent restaurants and interesting places to explore.

I don't have a dingy, so going ashore is a bit limited. If we could swim ashore that might work, but I don't think that is too practical. (but if that is possible anywhere, let me know!)

I like the idea of a quiet anchorage... I'll be going with a french toast connoisseur and I want to make sure everything is accommodating.

Larchmont is definitely a good possibility, Chat 19 looks great. Also looking into Port Jefferson, as Tempest suggests. Is there something that is not to be missed on the CT side?

Anymore ideas?

You have heard about hurricane Earl and how it may track very near to our area in the Fri./Sat. time frame, right? I'd suggest that you may end up delaying your trip to Huntington until Sunday after the TS (tropical storm) has passed.
That said, Huntington Harbor has a public (town) dock that I'm pretty sure you can tie up to and there is a decent Italian restaurant right across the street - I forget the name. Tutto Pazzo - Tuscan Italian Restaurant - Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, Christenings That part of Huntington is called Halesite.
Huntington Yacht Club (HYC) usually has a few transient moorings, is nearby and you could transact getting one before going to dinner. Huntington Harbor is very protected but it is also very tightly packed with moored boats.
Another option is Northport which is also accessible from Huntington Bay.
Have fun and be safe and keep a weather eye out for worse then usual conditions.

Defiinitely Belay my suggestion for Port Jefferson for the moment, until after Earl passes.

Port Jeff is under Tropical Storm warnings along with most of Long island sound.

Check out ActiveCaptain - The Interactive Cruising Guidebook - Marina Reviews, Fuel Prices, Anchorages for an annotated map with lots of reviews of anchorages, marinas, and town docks.

I'd look hard at Mamaroneck. Tie up at foot of main drag, one block walk to theater, restaurants galore, etc. And, for you, a very short sail home.

@CalebD - Yeah I'm watching Earl pretty closely. Right now it looks to be passing very early Saturday. Delaying until Sunday seems like a very good possibility, but I'm still hoping for the best. Thanks for the info on Huntington.

@jjablonowski - I had not looked at Mamaroneck, thanks. Are you suggesting tying up at the municipal marina? ActiveCaptain says it is free for a couple hours.

Do they require membership with a reciprocating club? I'm not sure how that works and I'm not a member anywhere.

Hello,

If you make it to Huntington and don't have time to go very far the next day, you can sail to Northport. It's a very simple trip in Huntington bay. Grab a mooring from Seymours. It's $40 and includes the launch service. Northport it a nice small town with a few good restaurants, quaint shops, parks, etc.
