Fire Island Inlet

I've heard that there is extreme shoaling across the entire width of the Fire Island inlet--depths of 4 feet at high tide and less than 2 at low tide. Does anyone have any recent experience there?

My boat (an Albin Cumulus-28' sailboat) draws about 4'6".

I have a friend with a Hans Christian who loves Sore Thumb, and he reported scraping badly at high tide thru the inlet, but he does have a 6' draft. I think you would be safe at high tide in the channel.

The best thing to do is ask the commercial fishing boats that go out of Captree and you might get some good info from the Coast Guard station at Fire Island. They monitor Ch 16.

I just spoke to boater who charter fished out of there recently. He also reported that the marked channel is not at depth. The boat he was in grounded in the channel. Check Local Notice to Mariners.
