where to route your lightning strike?

Greetings from Plano, TX.

I am the only sailboat in Flat Creek marina, lake palistine, Tx.
would like to know where to place a 4 awg wire on the mast and then route it to go overboard into the water, with a 2sq ft plate.
Will the strike follow the wire or will it continue down to the mast stepping plate and then down to the centerboard bolt. ?????
Any advise taken into consideration .
Pegleg
