Long shaft is always good with an outboard on a stern, a long shaft will reduce the tendency of the prop popping out of the water, which will happen anyway, its just a question of how often. The less often the better. I'd say any sailboat with an outboard "needs" a long shaft, many probably need longer shafts than actually provided by a "long" shaft.
good luck.
