Spreader dimensions or build?

My new to me 1986 21' MacGREGOR does not have a spreader on the mast. After visiting the other forum and some discussion, I have come to this forum to see if anyone knows how I can make a spreader or purchase one. I can't seem to find anything on line for the detailed specifications. And since I am new to sailing I am not sure how the rigging would attach.

Thanks,

Rich

Re: Spreader dimensions or build?

Thought you got the answer on the first thread you started? Just look at at the mast and see if there were any attachments. the length of the shrouds will also tell you if you had or needed a spreader.

Selden. and others make them. should be easy to DIY.

Re: Spreader dimensions or build?

White Oak and White Ash both make good spreaders. Aluminum tubes with small notch sized for your shrouds would also be sufficient. It is probably easy enough to call or email https://www.dwyermast.com/ and see what they think would be best. Good luck.

Have a good look around the boat.. could be they are just sitting in a locker, stowed for transport. You will have spreader root fittings on the mast, most likely. The spreaders themselves may simply be some aluminum tubing.

As I mentioned before, if you step the mast without spreaders your upper shrouds will be way too long...

Re: Spreader dimensions or build?

the Mac 21 is the mast head version of the older venture 21 which had a fractional rig. the mast head version had spreaders and the fractional version did not. the mac 21 was built with both versions. Call Blue Waters Yachts in Wa. I believe they are still handling the Mac parts

Re: Spreader dimensions or build?

I have called Blue Water Yachts, I expect a call back some time today, the first gentlemen thought it should have one but he is checking with his boss, he did no of two versions...As a new sailboat owner I flip flop with all I read. But what I see on the mast is no spreader. I see no signs of a different bracket on the mast. The shrouds are all set up for the no spreader type. I helped lower the mast when I picked it up. I just wanted to make sure I was sailing in a safe and factory suggested design.

Thanks,

Re: Spreader dimensions or build?

check the forestay, does it attach to the mast head or about 6' down the mast. if at the mast head you should have spreaders. how may shrouds do you have? where do they attach to the mast?

Re: Spreader dimensions or build?

I attached the picture of the mast, I have a head stay and a forestay with upper and lower shrouds.

Does this help?
