New Steering Maintainance Video

Here is a new new video I just completed for Ocean Navigator Magazine and Edson Marine. It covers the basics of maintaining the pedestal end of a chain and cable steering system. Hope it is help to someone.

Could we have one for hydraulic steering as well?

Very nice I really liked the annotations especially the one about the lost screws. You left out all the below deck stuff is that the next installment?

Re: New Steering Maintainance Video

Yes the below deck one is in process, I will then do one on interfacing autopilots followed by one on rudders. Not sure about the hydraulic one but it is a good idea and I will see what I can do.

Re: New Steering Maintainance Video

Very helpful video! I was surprised by use of both T-9 and 30 wt motor oil on the chain. I thought we liked the dry-lube stuff best since it won't collect dust and dirt. Different rule of thumb for chain, I guess? Thanks!

Re: New Steering Maintainance Video

I think the problem with the dry lube is when it get wet. It would be hard to keep the steering always dry. The T-9 is to protect the chain from corrosion while the oil helps lube the chain rollers. I suppose there is no perfect solution but then it is a boat!

Re: New Steering Maintainance Video

i guess maintenance on the hydraulic is basic: fluid level, leaks, and air bubbles. that's it
