Tempermental starter

Hey Kids

New solenoid, good batteries, fairly new starter motor.

After 2-4 cranks, everything goes silent. Will start after a few of these attempts.

1978 OMC Saildrive....eat your heart out.

Thoughts?

Re: Tempermental starter

Does it turn over fast or slow? Does it actually just stop turning while cranking (dead spot in the armature as Denise says) or does it sputter and fail to start?

I have a sauna on my boat, therefore I win.

Re: Tempermental starter

Two likely possibilities;
* dirty/loose/corroded connections between starter, solenoid and battery.
* dirty/loose/corroded connection between battery, keyswitch and solenoid.

Pick your favorite, and start cleaning, applying dielectric grease, and torquing the connectors.
