mirage 236 info

i have recently bought a 1979 mirage 236 from a member of my sail club. i looked for info on this boat before i bought it but there is very little out there and there seems to be two different 236's too. one is a fixed keel and mine is a daggerboard version. all the info i could get came from sail club members that raced against this boat before the owner put it on the trailer 6 yrs ago and they all said it was a fast boat that none of them could compete with it on the racecourse and they all hated it......sounds like a bunch of whiners to me!!!!
i race a hunter 25 that is a very good boat for med to heavy air, but most of our weather on lake weiss in north ala is moderate at best. i haven't raced the mirage yet but am looking forward to stretching her legs when i get a couple of things finished and back in the water....i need all the info i cn get on this boat so i'm posting this message to see if i can get some replys...let me hear from you...........

Great light air boat!! I used to race on one with a friend. We were able to consistently race well in light to moderate air. Be careful in heavier air as it is very tender. We found a blade to be most helpful over about 12 knots. Also you may want to look at the rudder housing as it seems to be a weak link, we had it repaired twice. It would seperate from the boat. All things told you should love this boat. PM me if I can be of any help.

RDStanley

I now have the Mirage 236 that started this post, Dinkray didn't like the way the boat heels. I plan to buy new headsails, 110 and 155 tri radials. I sail in light air most of the time but do the Dauphin Island race on Mobile Bay where the wind is usually 15 to 18 knots by the end of the race.

I hope to race the boat on Lake Weiss and Mobe Bay.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Randy

Hi Randy,
You may be in my neck of the woods. I am in Tallahassee, Fl but keep my boat in Cairo, Ga. A Mirage 236 hull #9. I bought mine 1.5 years ago from South Carolina. The interior was gutted and the exterior was stripped in prep for a restoration. Have completed the restoration and sailed it a few times. I have a 110, 155, and 170 headsails. The only one I have used to this point is the 170. Boat is a little tender but has good speed and is responsive.

Mark,
I would love to pick your mind on this project. At this point my deck is stripped of hardware and sanded, I will be painting the deck, applying nonskid, sanding the hull and buffing the gelcoat. After the deck hardware in installed with proper bedding I will finish removing all wood and replacing the interior. I plan to use the interior layout of the boat on this link. http://35knots.com/mirage-236-photos.html

I would love to be able to discuss this by phone if you have the time. You are 5 hours south of me, but I would love to bring my boat down when completed to sail them together.

Re: mirage 236 info

All Mirage 5.5 and 236 owners and wanabees. There is a Yahoo group dedicated to these boats on Yahoo Groups. Lots of pictures, where boats are located, and stuff for sale.
