Learning To Sail

We’re proud to announce that SailNet’s new Learning to Sail collection is up and running. A comprehensive resource holding insight for both new and seasoned hands alike, the Learning to Sail collection advises all viewers on how to get out and get sailing. Whether you’re learning at a sailing school, or teaching yourself how to sail, this collection provides information on how to get started, covering topics from the basics to navigation and much more. Users can also subscribe to the Learning to Sail e-mail discussion list that enables them to query other sailors and students on the best way to learn to sail, as well as benefit from graphic tutorials designed to get them familiarized with the boat and its components. Our writers, editors, and web-developers have worked hard in the hopes that this will become a valuable resource that furthers the sailing learning curve. Check it out at www.sailnet.com/collections/learningtosail/

Our table of contents divides the  Learning to Sail collection into nine easy categories.

  • Getting Started will get you on your way.
  • Basic Sailing Language will have you speaking sailorese in no time.
  • Basic Sailing Theory dispels the mystery behind how sailboats work.
  • Beginner’s Equipment has all the gear you’ll need.
  • Basic Seamanship emphasizes safety and etiquette.
  • Basic Boating Skills provides instruction on docking, knots, and more.
  • Your First Sail covers sail trim and sailing basics.
  • Beginning Navigation examines the art of knowing where you are.
  • The Sailing Life celebrates the joy of sailing.

Our Tools and Resources sections appear at the bottom of every category. We also have Graphic Tutorials on parts of the Hull, Rig, and Sail as well as a dynamic explanation of the Rules of the Road, and some lights and shapes a sailor can expect to encounter.

The Nautical Dictionary is a useful resource found not only in the Learning to Sail section of the site, but throughout all of the SailNet site, it can be found on the left hand rail for quick and easy use. Unfamiliar with a word or term? Type it in, press return, and the definition appears.

The Learning to Sail e-mail discussion list will also prove to be beneficial for sailors and the aspiring to exchange information on how to learn to sail as they provide tips and explanation on mastering the art. There are also Suggested Readings, a list of Sailing Schools in our Yellow Pages, and last but not least, our Learning to Sail chat room where you can engage in real-time conversations with other students and sailors.
