Smile Morgan 27 cabin sole rotting?

A friend of mine just gave me a morgan 27. It needs a lot of work. The sole or floor in the cabin is rotting and needs to come up. Does anyone know what is underneath this flooring. Should be the fiberglass hull? I am assuming what is rotting is some kind of sub-floor. Anyone know what I should replace it with. Should there be a bilge underneath for water drainage? I read something online that said the original flooring in these Morgan's had carpet on top. Sounds weird. Thanks for your help.

Re: Morgan 27 cabin sole rotting?

From the pics of seen of my candidate boat, the flooring is marine grade plywood. Can you post pics of your flooring as a comparison?

Yes, there appears to be a shallow bilge area below this flooring in the pics I've seen.

Re: Morgan 27 cabin sole rotting?

I had a 1972 Morgan 27 for nine years. The floor was the hull, with a small recess for a bilge. You probably have an after thought false floor.

Yes, perhaps it isn't factory.

I've attempted to attach a pic so you can see the floor/subfloor(?) in the boat I was referring to.

Re: Morgan 27 cabin sole rotting?

From the picture, I am quite sure you have an "after market" cabin sole.

The recess where the keel bolts are located on my boat was only about 1/2" deep. As I previously stated, the stock from factory cabin sole is the hull.

Re: Morgan 27 cabin sole rotting?

The "factory" floor on these Morgans depends upon the year. Up through 1973 the floor was typically a layer of teak & holly over marine plywood. During the oil crisis of 1974, when fiberglass resin prices increased by 500%, there were many cut-backs and many boats were then produced with a glued carpet on top of the bare fiberglass.
