I've got an M-33 and the mast has some bad corrosion especially around the
winches. I was debating splicing the lower 10 feet of the mast but haven't been able to find anyone in my area that will do this. I know it's done all the time and I've seen plenty of boats around here with this done. Does anyone know of anyone in the south east that can handle this? I've also debated welding a reinforcement/winch pad where the
winches are now. I've heard mixed reviews about this method. Some tell me it will be nearly as strong as original, I've heard you shouldn't have any horizontal welds on the mast as it greatly weakens it and I've heard after the repair it will be the strongest portion of the mast. I don't know who to believe!? This seems like the simplest method but I'd like more feedback. Personally I don't think it will make it any worse and a mast replacement is cost prohibative.
