Unhappy installing halyards

I have a 1976 41ft OI ketch. I am having a hard time running the halyards through the mast. I am about 2/3rds in & they hit. Help.

Running 'em in top to bottom, or from the bottom? Mast up, or is mast down?

At a guess, I would say they must be running through some type of conduit inside the mast and you're hanging up on the lip of it. You might try running a smaller messenger line through and see if that hangs up.
