Refrigeration conversion

I have a Newport 30 which has an ice box. I have added a 12V refrigeration unit. Does anyone have any suggestions as to insulating the box on both the inside and outside of the box?

I am facing the same problem with my Newport 33. The outside of the box is nearly impossible to get to. I may add some closed cell foam to the inside on the sides and the bottom. I would think that should work fine. What side and make 12V refrigeration did you install?

Spray in place foam sold at home depot type stores works pretty good in those hard to get at places. If the fridge box in on the hull outboard, make sure to get some foam in between it and the hull which will otherwise transfer a lot of heat. If either of you have front opening boxes, a curtain of builder's plastic will help prevent too much cooling loss when door is opened. Same trick works inside a top opening box where you have separate freezing/refrigerating sections.

Placement of Icebox?

Obleo, is your box back in the corner - impossible to even get to the top without lying on the sink?! (Maybe I'm short...)

I have just "inherited" my grandmother's 1983 33 (fortunately she's still alive and has been sailing still at 92!), and have spent many many hours aboard this boat. The placement of the icebox has never seemed very good, since it is way back in the corner and quite deep, so I am trying to figure out if redoing the galley is better in the long run than trying to convert the hard-to-reach icebox. I don't think my kids would be able to access anything in it as it is now...not to mention the insulation issues, etc.

Do It Yourself Refrigeration Article

Check out the DIY section at http://capitalyachts.info/index.html This site is hosted for free by Sailnet in all of their generosity. Look between article 41 and 50 for the refrigeration upgrade one Newport owner did, with text and pictures.

Nice to see it's not just me. I hate our ice box, and right now I have a small frig someone gave me, and I'm trying to figure out how to remodel the galley
