Hurth Transmission

Friends,

I'm looking for a new transmission, or one in good enough shape I can have it rebuilt, and my mechanic is having no luck. The boat is a 33 ft Newport. She has the original three cylinder Universal diesel, model 5424 I believe. The transmission she had was a Hurth model HBW-5, with a 2-to-1 gear ratio. My mechanic tells me that the replacement is now sold by ZF Marine Distributers. They have none on the shelf and MAY have new ones available from Germany POSSIBLY in March. Their new model number is ZF10M. My mechanic is not aware of a compatible transmission that would be easily substituted. Thoughts and suggestions?

I've been trying to rejoin the group since we returned from sailing in late September. I can get monthly updates, but not "real time" email messages in my box as I got before. Help!

You might try these guys...they have the HBW5 with a 3:1 right now. May be able to help.

Thanks. I'll try that and tell you how it goes. Can you tell me how to rejoin the Newport group so all messages appear in my in box?

John & Heather.... may I suggest a TMC40 to replace the trani on your Newport. This is the same trani we use on the small BETAMARINE engines.

It will bolt directly to your Universal 5424 engine.

Regards,...George.
