Newport 28 - adding stern perch seats
Have any of you modified your Newport 28 stern pulpits to add a "perch seat" - like those you see on Catalina's?

I've seen the Sternperch seats available from CRL Marine but the Newport doesn't have a middle rail. I'm thinking about adding a rail and seats but wanted benefit of anyone else who's done it.

Stern Rail Perch Seats

I'm looking at constructing some stern rail perch seats in the next few weeks for my 1978 Newport 28. I realize this is nearly two years after the post, but better late then never. What I am planning to do (based largely off the Good Old Boat article) is to construct them out of 3/4" UHMW plastic or HDPE. Both are fairly expensive as sheets, and the latter has some UV issues, but is plenty strong.

The plan is to make the base sit over the rail to distribute the weight, and have another "U" shaped piece mirroring the base about 6-8" above. I plan to use either stainless steel rod or solid plastic rod for the transitions. It should be plenty of support to keep you in the boat during a sail, so long as you keep your feet on the deck.

I have a CNC I plan to cut these with when I get the final design figured out. If anyone is interested, cutting additional pieces will be a snap (and they will actually fit!). I'd be happy to cut a few extra sets if you cover the shipping and the material. The plastic (HDPE anyway) is pretty heavy stuff, so the shipping cost a little...but I will let you know well before I cut the second set.

Still a great idea
Saw your post on this on Yahoo groups and I can tell you that I'm still interested as I never did come up with a suitable design or technique to accomplish this great feature. If you are able to describe or post the design you come up we'd be interested in participating with you on the cost.

Stern Rail Perch Seats
I'll try to work out a mock up design and get some pictures this weekend if I can. I've been out in California for about a week, so I need to get a little straightened out before I can devote my time to this project...and there is only a few minutes of the day that have enough light and won't make me pass out from the heat.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I get the rig figured out.

Stern Rail Seats mock-up
I built a full scale model out of plywood. It looks pretty good, and I think it is going to work. I've altered the backrest from the original design to make it a little easier. I'm thinking of adding a cup holder because there aren't any on the boat as it stands!

I plan to use HDPE for the rail connections as well. I'd welcome any suggestions before I machine these.

I couldn't get the pictures to post! I added to the Yahoo groups forum under the Miscellaneous album.

Stern post seats
I've added the seats, but can't get the images to upload here or on Yahoo. They are very solid, and after careful consideration of the warnings about the seats, I ignored them. The natural posture in the seats leaves your feet on the deck and your hand on the backstay. We will certainly we very wary of anyone who can't touch the floor with their feet, sitting in the seats.

The whole project cost about $110.

Stern post seat pics
I got the pictures to load onto Yahoo this morning. I still can't get them to work on this site!

Stern Rail Seats Tested - Finally
The weather has been pretty miserable lately (I installed the starboard seat in the pouring rain), but it finally cleared and I was able to get out and sail yesterday. There were eight of us in total, the seats were a very popular spot and really helped keep the cockpit clear. It was a real light air day, but we had a little wind for a while.

All times are GMT -4. The time now is 06:16 PM.
