Newport30 - Shaft Strut Support

I am helping a friend replace the shaft log hose and other driveline parts on his N-30. I have the transmission flange off and want to pull the shaft so that I can replace the cutlass bearing. My question is - can the shaft support strut be easily removed from the hull and replace the bearing off the boat or is it better to drop the rudder and pull the shaft then try to remove the bearing?

Red face do it right

Drop the rudder and check for shaft corrosion, lack off oxygen causes corrosion.
There is a gasket that seals against water coming up the shaft sleeve when sailing. I patched the shaft with two part metallic epoxy.
