Re-packing stuffing box
Leaking at the shaft seal tells me it's time to repack the "stuffing box" of our 83 Newport 28. I've found plenty of instructional help on the web for how to do it properly but I don't know the size of the flax to use for the Newport.

Has anyone repacked their shaft seal on their Newport and know the size of flax I should buy or have any pearls of wisdom on the job?

what size is the prop shaft?

Have you tried tightening the compression nut slightly? Usually there should be a light weep of water while the engine is running; and a drop ~30 seconds or so when stopped. The water lubricates the flax while the engine runs.

There is a newer type of flax that uses PTFE (Teflon) as the lubricating material and this type of packing can be tightened until the packing does not drip.

As for the diameter of the packing material; you will have to remove the compression nut and remove one of the rings of flax with a dental pick type tool to check the diameter; different stuffing boxes/shafts require different diameters of packing.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like I will start the process with a little disassembly, inspection and measurement of the existing flax size.

Success! Was able to repack the stuffing box last weekend. For the record on the flax size, our 83 Newport 28 uses 5/16" flax on a .875" shaft diameter.
