Newport 28 Roller Furling

Sorry if this is a duplicate, I looked through the Newport posts and didn't see anything.

I'm planning to purchase a roller furling setup for a 1978 Newport 28 in the next few weeks. If anyone can tell me brands to avoid or any recommendations I would appreciate it. The boat is the 30 years old, so cost is a bit of a concern.

Any advise, recommendations or warnings would be greatly appreciated!

CDI is by far the cheapest and works well. My boat is a charter boat in SF Bay where the wind is regularly 25+ knots. Lots of use by lots of people with no problems

did you buy a system? if so what? I have an 81 and am contemplating the same. Did you buy a new jib, if so where?

Sorry for the delay, I did get a system and had the genoa altered. We used Stix n' rigin' out of Kemah. After my research, I had planned to go with a Harkin system just because it is one of the most common around. The sailmaker we used to alter the sail told us to avoid CDI because of the plastic parts that are difficult to deal with.

When I spoke to Kevin (at Stix N' Rigin') he recommended a Facnor system because the new Harkin system had changed to a plastic drum from a metal one. The system is great! The sail was about $500 to alter, and the system with a new headstay was $2300. I would say I am a converted skeptic on roller furling.
