Anyone know where to get a heat exchanger for M18? Time to replace ours and I can't seem to locate one. Thanks

Hello,

I have a Univesal 5416 which is new to me. I just motored for about 8 hours straight from Mystic Seaport to Port Jefferson LI. I noticed my temp. was running at about 200 degrees. I've read that the operating temp. should be at 165-185. I opened up the cap on the top of the engine, and noticed it was empty. I put in about 8oz of water. I started it back up and it ran at the same temp. I now have what appears to be a small oil slick in the pan below the engine. Do you think I damaged the engine by overfilling the fresh water system? Also, you should know that I replaced the zinc in the heat exchanger and noticed the old zinc was completely gone. I didn't see any pieces in the heat exchanger. Your insight would be much appreciated.

We found a heat exchanger here 298633 Westerbeke, Universal, Medalist, Heat Exchanger. Our engine runs at about 165 under load. I check and replace both the zincs in the heat exchanger and one in the bottom of the coolant tank about every 3 months. We have completely rewired our Oday, so I am confident that it is wired correctly but the marina we are in seems to have a lot of stray voltage and we go through zincs ( both engine and shaft zincs ) about every 6 months. So i change them every 3 months just to be safe. Look at my post about universal engine and call Tractor Smart for your parts, it will save lots of $$$ and they are very helpful. We changed out the thermostat and replaced freshwater cooling side with 50-50 antifreeeze and engine runs at 165 max.
