Froggy,
It depends on what the prize is. Do the unexpected, one could always just sink it! Or demast it and put it in a container and ship it someplace (it was supposed to be a small sailboat) or just leave it there.

Anyway, I am happy with the one I have. I was just offering a light hearted option to a really sad story. Although, I do like the copyright idea! Does posting on SailNet constitute first to file?

cheers,
Ron

So... grandma got the kids from the custody of the state, after they have been placed in foster care. At least according to this story.

You could plan ahead to reduce your radar cross section even more. Replace your standing rigging with non-metallic shrouds and stays. Take a piece of metal flashing and make a cylindrical shroud to fit over your engine.
You could reduce IR emissions from your engine by insulating the engine compartment.
Reduce visibility of your sails by making them grey rather than white. My mast is black, I'd paint it grey.
Years ago (1986), I worked for a defense contractor who did stuff calculating radar cross sections. I once kidded my boss, "You fire me and I'll go to South America and use your tech to make DC3s into stealth aircraft". I nearly lost my security clearance for that crack.

CapRon:

I'd love to try this (legally of course). With a 24 hr head start, I would leave my home port of Shell Point in Apalachee Bay. After 24 hrs, the govt could use all resources at its disposal to see if it could find me.

What strategies could you use? Certainly, I'd change the appearance and name on my boat. Around here there are not that many sailboats so hiding in plain site amongst other sailboats is not a good one.
I'd go West to Carabelle, drop my mast, go under the bridge and far up the New River where nothing else goes way up into the swamp and hide her under a camo net in the weeds.
Or, I'd also go west, go up Ocklocknee Bay, Droop my mast, go under the bridge and then up a slough I know about into a tiny lake where she could be hidden under some trees deep in the weeds under a camo net.

Yeah, sure. That makes a lot of sense.

And by the way, she DID report them right away. Maybe at least find out a little bit about the story, before you comment.

This is most likely what they had to do, even if grandma was helping them. Otherwise she would have to report them right away or be charged as accessory.

Well, he didn't just tie up the grandmother. He threatened her life, held her at gunpoint, tied her up, and then stole her car.

Yeah, if he hadn't done all that stuff then it would probably be no big deal. On the other hand, if the parents weren't both drug dealers (as well as being users), and if they didn't have rap-sheets as long as your arm, then they probably wouldn't have lost custody in the first place.

This has been the top story here in the Tampa area since the day they kidnapped the children. From what I've seen and read, my conclusion is that these parents are major losers, and the kids will be far better off when they are back in the custody of the grandparents.

Since Cuba has an extradition treaty with the U.S. and routinely sends American criminals back, I suspect that it is just a matter of time before the parents are in prison where they belong.

Oh yeah, and feel free to call me judgmental, if you want. There are some things that we SHOULD be judgmental about, and I think this is one of them.

Re: Real life playing out one of my ideas.

I was only watching the particlulars with one eye and half an ear on the news, but it seems to me his big mistake was tying up his mother-in-law. If he had just taken his kids, the man hunt would probably not of even made the news. New radar, like the big screen deal we have on the tug boat, pick up kayaks in Biscayne bay. They are much more sensitive these day's.
My parents where constantly stealing me and my sister from each other when we were growing up, and My grandfather took me from them finally to put a stop to their shannagins. He put me on his little sloop and sailed over to the Bahamas, where they could'nt get at me. Mom finally won thank goodness. Anyway's, the kids are with their parrents. My mother stopped at nothing to get us back into her custody. My father just took us from her to be a dick. These kids are with both parents, leave 'em alone I say.

Hmmm, looks like you can...

Missing Hakken family reported to be in Cuba | Tampa Bay Times

Given the astonishing surveillance capabilities the US has over the Florida Straits, it is a bit surprising they could have made it across there, undetected... Lack of communication between various agencies could be a likely explanation, I suppose...

Or, simply too busy keeping tabs on Beyonce and Jay-Z, perhaps? (grin)

CapnRon47 should copyright his idea as a reality show!
