If they turn freely after service, ignore the looks and spend your money elsewhere.

Lots of manuals at L-36.com

Re: Winch Service Manuals for Barients, Barlows, and Lewmars!

Thanks for that link. I'm new here and need to learn a lot. I'm pretty sure that the 2 Barient and 1 Barlow winch on my 35 year old Cal are original. They work fine but the rigger referred to them as "unfortunate" or a "crime" or something like that. I just want to recreationally cruise the boat. No racing. Should I be concerned about their age or was he just hoping to upsell me to new self-tailing winches. New or new to me, winches are not really in this years budget. Or even the year after that if they work ok. So, I would like to know if I am crazy thinking these old winched will be okay.

As an aside, their finish seems a little worn and pitted. I tried some metal polish for little effect. Anybody have any ideas there?

Thanks
Elaine

Winch Service Manuals for Barients, Barlows, and Lewmars!

All --

As I was searching for equivalencies among sailboat winches I ran across this page of links to winch service manuals. You'll be interested too because it has links to a couple dozen winches, including all the Barients on my Islander 30. It may have yours too. If you haven't taken your winches apart before, you'll find the exploded diagrams and instructions useful.

It also has a winch comparison table of which models of the different brands are close to the same specs, and a couple of the old catalogs.

Enjoy!

Tom

5/6/2013 EDIT: Oh, for pete's sake. Sailnet.com mangled my post after I attached the link. I tested it as soon as it posted, and was originally fine. Here is the winch service site. (It is http://l-36.com/winches.php for your reference in case it gets mangled again).
