ModMMax Thanks for the advice. I talked to Garmin. They helped to identify the data cards I need. shopped for price and Boat World got the order. The good news is that new versions of most of the cards will make up the order. Thanks again for the help.

camaraderie A place where people know their stuff about both electronic AND the paper charts you'll need is:
www.bluewaterweb.com for Bluwater Charts and Books

ModMMax Thanks All,
I have been to both West Marine and Boater's World re price and availablility of the chips needed. Boater's World appears to have the best prices. To make the trip from Florida to Georgean Bay, I think I need the following chips, MUS 601X, MUS 0004R, MUS 017R, and MUS 019R. The maps and coverage information in the catalogues are a little confusing and the people at the marine stores are not much help. These things are so expensive that I hate to buy one I will not need and I don't want to be caught without one I do need so any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ronbye You will also want to ensure that when you buy your charts for the area that you are sailing in , that they are indeed the most recent charts. On the Garmin website, you can go look up and see what the latest chart release is. As well, make sure that you check the chart detail list for the chart package you are buying (also on the Garmin webpage). I got the shock of my life when the chart package for my area did not contain the charts for two of the largest areas that we sail in. Even though Garmin advertises that it covers all of Eastern Newfoundland and parts of Labrador. So make sure that the areas that you will be sailing in has the charts you need. In any case, you will want the paper charts anyway. Don't rely on electronic charts as the sole means of navigation.

sailingdog I don't believe you really have too many choices as the only electronic charts that work with the Garmin are the Garmin proprietary BlueChart charts. Unfortunately, they're pretty much locked into the same price whereever you get them, since they're proprietary.

You can find out more at www.garmin.com.

pigslo I have a Garmin G.P.S. hooked up to my laptop with Garmin Bluechart installed and works fine for me. I believe Sail Magazine had an article explaining the dif between raster and vector. The bluechart is vector.

Garmin plotter charts

Our new to us boat has a Garmin 2010C plotter. In April we intend to move the boat from Florida to the Bahamas for a few weeks, then back to Florida and up the ICW to New York, the Hudson River, Erie and Oswego Canals, Lake Ontario, the Trent-Severn waterway and eventually Georgian Bay. I need advice on what electronic charts/chips to buy and the best place to get them. Any help appreciated.
