My wifi only iPad uses an external GPS. I know the Garmin app is connected because the boat icon moves when the boat moves. Also, the GPS has an app that shows that it is running, shows how much battery life remains, and how many satellites it is connected to. Along with a bunch of other data.

All 3G iPads have a GPS receiver in them.

Minnesail, so how do you know if your external GPS is linked to Garmin Bluechart Mobile?

Update:

Garmin has answered my question. It is a NO.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'll be glad to help here. Only charts purchased through the app are going to be usable in the app. The charts purchased for your 78sc will not load to the app. "

Re: Garmin Blue Chart Mobile apps - hate to buy charts again

My iPad has its own GPS which is running Polar Navy version now. Unfortunately, its function is rather limited.

Garmin also offers their own GPS

I believe both versions of the iPad have the GPS, the non-cellular (wifi-only) version just doesn't have a way to receive the signal from the satellite. I bought an external GPS unit from Bad Elf, looks like it will work very well. It can simultaneously connect to the iPad, iPhone, and my laptop via bluetooth.

If you have wifi enabled NMEA 2000 network and a 4000 or higher CP, you can send waypoints and routes to your CP via wireless.

I agree. I wss being cheap.

How does BlueChart Mobile work for navigation purpose? Can it be a viable backup chart-plotter?

Garmin Bluechart mobile charts are much cheaper. I paid about $45 for All of NA, CA, Caribbean and northern tip of SA. You can download the entire world for a few hundred bucks.

Re: Garmin Blue Chart Mobile apps - hate to buy charts again

Thanks Folks. I have contacted Garmin. Hope I will get an answer soon. The Blue Charts I purchased were $180 a piece.
