Re: Sailboat Wooden Steering Wheels

I would LOVE to have a classic spoked wheel on our classic boat; we already have so much wood to oil that what's a bit more? Right now, our budget is prioritized to things that either make the boat safer or sail faster.

We use spoked wooden wheels as permanent trophies for one of our races -- the larger wheels can holds lots of small brass plaques to commemorate each year's race winners.

Wood wheels on mostly white fiberglass boats are pretty not in high demand. I don't think your going to get rich on your idea. Even over on the wooden boat forums I started a discussion some time ago. Wood wheels are just not that high on the list. Epoxy encapsulated wheels won't last longer and will still suffer the effects of weather, water and temperature.
There are hundreds of places selling wood wheels that are decorative but not made for actual use on a boat.

Your wheels are metal wheels with a wood rim. big difference then real wooden wheels

here's a build in lamination, don't know the language.

Re: Sailboat Wooden Steering Wheels

The shop I am working with already has in place a steering wheel manufacturing facility, below see a couple pictures just for example- these are for high end classic cars, mainly from the 50s and 60s. The wood application is already understood, it will be just now adjusting the process to apply it to a suitable sailboat wheel structure.

I'd be open to discussing with anyone interested in a deal the ability to work together to get a wood wheel on your boat as I am looking to learn more about the sailboat community and expand the offering of the steering wheel manufacturer.

The wood choice is limitless in choice and alternating woods as seen here (or simply a single wood choice). Let me know if anyone would like to pursue this with me as I really believe that this artisan would provide a great focal point for many boat lovers.

Ha, I've seen two now, yours and mine but, I don't have the outer ring

Re: Sailboat Wooden Steering Wheels

From a cabinet makers point of view, that outer circular piece cost is the over riding factor.
BTW the best way to get longevity out of exterior bright-work is to completely seal it with epoxy; 3 coats, before applying a quality PHENOLIC varnish.
Why?
Because that will eliminate hydrodynamic expansion and contraction, which is detrimental to coating adhesion.

Re: Sailboat Wooden Steering Wheels

Mojoaudio, those wheels are really nice, no strike that, they are gorgeous. Damn, I want one now. Not going to pay $1000 for one though. Will be replacing the ugly white wheel on my new boat with a stainless one from a consignment store. Unless you want to send me a free sample so that I can tell everyone how lovely it is
My main concern would be compatibility with autohelms, they are usually designed for 6 spoke wheels I think?

You mean like this?

I've seen precisely one boat (mine) that has a wood wheel.

I have no idea who made it, or how much it cost. I've seen wheels like it used at sails.biz/ for about 700 bucks.

FYI, I have the stainless original wheel in the v-berth storage compartment.

Re: Sailboat Wooden Steering Wheels

I have a Edson Teak spoke wheel and love it, especiually in cold weather In 8 years I have only had to refinish it once, and with it covered I doubt it will need another finish anytime soon. 3 Coats of Epifanes Natural follwed by 5 or 6 coats of clear

If I were to buy another wheel I would consider wood, the leather wrap s also nice but will need to be redone at some pioint as well
