Yes, I know a little about them. I own a 1971 Allied XL-2.
The reason you don't hear more about these boats is they are quite rare. They were produced from 1968 until 1982. Only 28 XL-2's were ever built. They were designed by Sparkman and Stephens to meet the CCA rating. They were built in Sloop and Yawl Configurations.
They have a relatively tall rig as they were originally a racing design. They have the beautiful classic overhangs of associated with the CCA designs. The cabin has 6'+ full head room and depending on the arrangement they sleep up to 7. They sail beautifully as you would expect from an S&S design from that era. They were very solidly (heavily) built as many boats were in the early days of fiberglass.
If you like the classic styling of long overhangs and sweeping sheerlines these boats are well worth a look if you can find one for sale.

Anyone know anything about Allied 42's? I saw one for sale the other day and she was quite the looker. Appeared to be an old CCA, Bill Trip or S&S-type centerboard design. If they're built as well as Allied's other boats then I'm surprised that one doesn't hear more about these boats.
