The Squelch button/knob/whatever is actually a gain control for the receiver that varies the sensitivity of the receiver to signals. Weak "background" signals merely generate "noise" so decreasing the gain (stepping up the Squelch) reduces the receiver's sensitivity to such signals. When traveling in near shore waters, we tend to keep the Squelch pretty high so that we are only subjected to nearby transmissions that may be intended for us and less noise/chatter of which there is too much on 16. We also use the scan function covering 16 and 22A to hear CG transmissions that may be of concern.

We have an Icom M34 and it does the same thing - not all the time and not on every channel, but primarily on Ch 16 when it happens. Seems to be worse near a major center than away from. It's annoying, to be sure.

Squelch blocks background noise. Turn it up until the static stops. You can turn it up a bit more if you're still getting garbled messages from other states.

We have a handheld VHF radio (icom). It seems that unless we have the squelch control on the maximum setting that all we get is static. I don't really kow what the squelch control is or how it works, but am wondering if by having it set to its highest setting am I filtering out messages? How does thw squelch control actually work?
