Re: Buying a Cal 33 - Good boat?

I think either version were good boats. The Hunt design 33 was my engineering project to put into production, so I'm more familiar with it. There are two of them in Melbourne FL, both owned by friends, and they have held up very well over the years. Wish I owned one myself as it was always one of my favorite boats.

Re: Buying a Cal 33 - Good boat?

Sorry that early Cal designer is C. William Lapworth, not Sopworth ,which I stated in a previous post.

What year? If the boat you are looking at is an older (Sopworth designed) Cal, and if your first priority is sailing performance, then you should not hesitate. Older Cals are well designed with bulletproof hulls. The flimsy hatches and other below deck accessories can be dealt with fairly easily.

Re: Buying a Cal 33 - Good boat?

My Family had a Cal 33.We got it new in '71 and had it into the 80's.One of my best sailing memories was sailing from Cape Porpoise ME to Cohasset MA in 10 hours.7.5 knot average.had just a working jib, no main.Lots of surfing. They track very well, like they are on rails. You can leave the helm and go to the head and the boat is still on course when you get back.Upwind they are fast so long as the dont heel more then 15 degrees. They dont like to heel to much slows down and wants to round up because of the fat beam. The only problem we had was she went up on the beach in a big northeaster and devoloped a leak in the trailing edge of the keel.It was finally 'cured' by installing floors. Also the bottom is very flat.In certain conditions she would pound.

Call 33 made between 1971 and 1973

CAL 33 sailboat specifications and details on

Cal 33 Hunt (very different boat, designed by Hunt at the end of Cal's company. I believe they hired Hunt to do a bunch of boats to "modernize" the line. A much more modern boat. Made from 1984 to 1996.

Buying a Cal 33 - Good boat?

Just beginning buying a Cal 33. Question, what is the difference in a Cal 33 and a Cal 33-2? I see both mentioned, but have not heard what is different.

Is the Cal 33 a good sailboat? The one I am now considering looks mint. I am just beginning the process of going over it prior to purchase.

Pointers/suggestions welcomed.
