For $55K you can do much better than a IP31. These are slow, cranky sailing boats. Other BB discussions have brought up problems with rudder support and with difficulty tacking reliably. I personally hate the motion of these boats. I would think that for that kind of budget you might do better trying to find a boat with similar displacement but spread out over a longer waterline and with less beam. You will have a more comfortable boat and one that deals with conditions better. For Florida, with its light summer sailing conditions I would try to find a boat with an L/D at 200 or lower. Shoal draft is important which is one thing that an Island Packet does do well.

Island Packet 31
I''ve sailed small boats all my life -- Hobbie, Catalina 22, Snipes, Sunfish and currently have a Precision 23 at Port St. Joe, Fl. My salt water experience is limited. I''m looking for a larger boat for coastal cruising and currently looking hard at an 85 IP 31 and a 90 Admiral 32. Can anyone offer advice. My top budget is about 55,000. Thanks. Jim Morpeth
