Good point, Rick. I should have been more clear. The Cheoy Lee could be a good boat for SOMEONE, but not for the OP.

In addition to mentioning the seal, the CL ad refers to it as a "project boat." One thing's for sure: If the seller calls it a "project boat," it needs a LOT of work before it can be seaworthy.

I think that any project boat is a horrible idea for a first time boat buyer. He could spend a couple years working on the boat without any actual sailing. That's a horrible way to start sailing.

Re: anyone selling a 30+ft sailboat?

I agree, that's a big job, but it might be worth it for that boat if she's in good condition. We did the rear seal as part of my engine work. If it was "just" the seal, and no transmission and other stuff, I think that would be a $4-5K job if a marina does it. Depending on how the engine room is laid out and which engine it is, that COULD be a DIY job for someone handy. It would take MANY hours, but it's do-able. The re-mounting of the engine and alignment is the big deal.

There's a 36 Choey Lee in Norfolk, VA area for $6K on Craigslist. Needs a rear main seal on the engine (a big job) but that's a lot of boat for that money.

Call the boat yards in your area and surrounding. There are a lot of boats that are put up for auction, from the boat yards. There was a turn key Catalina 25 for 5000 last year and larger boats for less. The yards want them out so they can rent land to people that can pay.

Re: anyone selling a 30+ft sailboat?

Lot's of sub $10k boats on the West Coast. The combination of a soft market and exorbitant storage fees make for a lot of desperate sellers. Buyer beware though, could be lots of expensive deferred maintenance/repairs involved.

Oh! I forgot to mention BoatTrader.com in the list before. Also a good resource.

Re: anyone selling a 30+ft sailboat?

Three years ago I got the $5k bargain on my Pearson 323. Which has taken a lot of TLC. But I have updated a few things to add about $2700 to the pot. The boat would now sell in the high teens to twenty. So there are true valves out there. I would suggest that you look at as many boats as you can so you can recognize a value when it appears. Good luck

Plenty of boats at marina's just sitting there.

I found one; $36k ready to go, for only $6k.
