Battery Recommendation

Turns out I have two group 24s which both failed load tests (one miserably). Ended up with two new Interstate Marine Deep Cycle SRM-24s. Looked at upgrading to 27s but the new battery boxes were going to be a tight squeeze as well cable length issues. Thanks for the advice and insight.

Re: Battery Recommendation

Speaking of garden tractor batteries starting the diesel.

Yes, the do.

If you can only fit a couple 27 - 31's in the box and have no room for a separate start battery you can almost always find room for lil bitty battery somewhere as a starting batter backup.

Re: Battery Recommendation

IF you have a battery box, you might try to fit a group 29 in it. My boat had two group 27s and there was about Ĺ" of space inside the two battery boxes. The group 29s fit the box like a hand in a glove...

Regarding brands; the Duracell brand - available at SAMs club - are good batteries at a good price. Our buddy Maine Sail (post #4, above) did a good write up on these some time ago. Google search "SAMs Club /site:www.sailnet.com" and you should find the thread.

Battery Recommendation

Two deep cycles it is. Any manufacturer or brand recommendations?

Re: Battery Recommendation

Two deep cycles will be better and should last longer... You can start that engine with a garden tractor battery so the deep cycles will be more than enough..

Stu

I am certainly open to other battery configurations. Are you recommending one deep cycle and one starting or actually two deep cycles?

Would two deep cycles provide sufficient starting capability?

Re: Battery Recommendation

Josh, dual purpose wet cells do neither one very well. You should purchase true deep cycle batteries. AGMs simply aren't worth it and require complete recharging all the time to avoid early death.

Battery Recommendation

Currently have two dual purpose wet cells in my Catalina 27. They are struggling to start my Universal M-18 so its probably time to replace them.

Any recommendations for dual purpose group 27's? Looking for high quality wet cells unless there is a great deal on AGMs or gels.

We anchor out frequently and I will soon have an SPX-5 wheel autopilot installed so usage is generally light outside of starting.

Thanks in advance.

Josh
