re: New owner of an old boat

There isn't a boat out there that isn't loved by some and hated by others and both sides have very good reasons. Does she float? Are you sailing? Does she heel (tip) too much for you? You're good. If she's made it this far, she must be OK. I sail a Lancer 25. I think this is also unpopular. But, except for not pointing very well, I think she's a fine lady. We can do 7 knots in the right wind, sail fora week at at time and take 6'-0 seas. I'm good.

So, treat her like your sweetheart. If somebody speaks ill of her, defend her honor and kick their asymmetrical. We'll understand. But really, get to know her, her moods, her weaknesses, her strengths. Buff her hull and paint her bottom. Some new lines from the bargain bin at the chandlery. Treat her like a lady and she'll clean up real nice, like Eliza Doolittle.

Thanks everyone for the welcome!

I have attached one picture of sunset on Lake Michigan. Poorly stored lines, random water bottle and all. It is the best I have for now.

The SC23 owners list and forums appear to be defunct.

I hope to post some a successful trip report soon!

Can't be too unpopular, you got an owners association.

New owner of and old boat

Any boat that gets you on the water is popular in my book. :-)congrats. We are refitting our first boat and hoping to be ready to sail some next spring. Good luck and enjoy!

Welcome, Scott!

Meh. My first boat was "unpopular." It floated, it got me where I wanted to go (which, fortunately, wasn't far), and was easy to maintain. That's all that I was concerned about.

That said, never heard of a South Coast 23, but if anyone has, you'll get plenty of help.

PS: we like success stories and trip reports, too, not just "How do I" questions.

And pictures. Lots of pictures, please.

New owner of an old boat

My first season sailing my South Coast 23 has just ended. She is hauled out about about to be put in a barn.

I have been reading sailnet for some time now, so I thought it was time to make an account. I hope to get some advice on repairs (mostly) and upgrades (I wish there were more of these) that I have planned for the fall and spring.

It seems that I have a somewhat unpopular model of boat. If there are any other South Coast 23 owners out there I would like to hear from you!
