DRIVED STOPPED is telling you that the computer can no longer move the drive. It can be a problem in the drive, steering, or computer.

It is sometimes caused by carbon build up in the drive motor especially in motors that have seen a lot of use. Faults in the computer can cause the same message.

Drive limit is in the setup program. The limit is based on the position of the rudder reference and when set properly will stop the drive from extending or contracting fully.

Thanks for posting that. Good to know that this can happen, and that this is a potential fix. I haven't had it happen to me but I have the same unit so if mine stops working, I'll check it out. Loctite blue should be a good fix to hold the screw in since you can still undo it if needed.

There aren't any limit switches in the device. Lazy engineering. Raymarine recommends putting in mechanical stops either on the steering quadrant or the actuation arm that attaches the ram to the rudder shaft, preventing the ram from going to the extreme range of motion.

Raymarine Linear Actuator Type 2S stopped working !

Stopped working with the message on the control head "DRIVE STOPPED"

I could feel the clutch engaging as the wheel would lock but it was no longer steering.

Got it out and took it apart expecting to find that the brushes were worn out. However the only thing wrong that I can see is that the bit that looks like a ram but I suspect contains some kind of lead screw was loose in the backplate. It screwed back in and now seems tight.

The motor runs but I have yet to try a full test in situ as I need someone smaller and more limber to refit it.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you stop it happening again. I am tempted to apply blue Locktite.

Also I have a related question on this. I have built similar actuators and always incorporated limit switches. I can see no limit switches so what happens at the end of the travel. Is it as crude as sensing a stalled drive motor?
