Re: Any one know a thing or two about booms

Either use a shackle, or a soft shackle. With a 1/4" amsteel blue line with an eye splice in the end. Never use the maximum size line a piece of gear allows. It generates a lot of extra friction since it just barely fits, and with modern lines you don't need the strength.

ok, at least what type fitting should I use at the outhaul car? I figure a fitting is better than a knot. Just need to know before I go and buy the line, which I am wanting to go asap. Soon as I know what I should buy.

Re: Any one know a thing or two about booms

Just wondering what size line I should use in place of the cable? The outhaul car only has a 5/16 hole. Do I want a fitting braided on there?

Re: Any one know a thing or two about booms

it is a pia. I stabbed the pad under my thumb with a slotted screw driver bit on the end of my impact wrench trying to get the aft sheve off. I lost the line inside the boom then took off the fore end of the boom only to find what you are talking about. Block attached to end of boom and two blocks with wire attached to that running the length of the boom. Ofcourse my leader line broke off so I will now have to fish the line through if I ever get this sheve out of there. I have a couple inch square to fish the line through. My thumb is seriously messed up so it will be a week or more before I go back into it. I work with the tools for almost twenty years now and end up getting hurt at home. go figure.

Be sure that you can access both ends of the line. On my boat, there is a 4:1 system with the end of the line attached to a becket inside the boom. The wire is attached to the aft block. Replacing the line would be a PIA!

Re: Any one know a thing or two about booms

GaryM is likely correct. You probably have a multipart in you boom. This should give you some ideas: Harken I suspect that you'll need to pull the front cap off your boom to get out the old out. While you're at it inspect the block(s) to see that they are working well.

Re: Any one know a thing or two about booms

No wonder it would not pull through. I have two blocks about two feet apart with the bitter end running through them. then a cable runs the length of the boom connected to the end or the aft block. Fun stuff.

Re: Any one know a thing or two about booms

Now I'm left with a stainless screw that I can not drill into to get out.
