I quite like using OpenCPN and some the tools it has to do "traditional navigation. I am trying to get them include a labeling plugin, but to no avail. I use Elements for web posting and PowerPoint for classroom work and publishing. An earlier link is to the PowerPoint notes for teaching the running fix in class. I was able to use different coloured lines for different LOP's and the course line to prevent confusing them.

Why the "dumb question" comment?

Did that refer to your question in a self-deprecating way? Sorry if I misunderstood.

I opened the chart PDF from the link that I posted earlier and selected a reasonable resolution. Then, because I used to be the presentation guru at my job, I copied a screen shot of the PDF into PPT.

A running fix is standard methodology in coastal navigation.

When I took ASA 105 last spring we turned in a chart along with the fill-in-the-dots sheet, and we were graded partly on our marks on the chart.

I pulled up a copy of the 1210tr chart from Ocean Graphics;http://www.oceangrafix.com/chart/zoom?chart=1210TR .

Be careful with labelling as well. In Sail Canada (CYA) plotting and labeling is worth marks. Is that also true in ASA?
Not sure.... IIRC, ASA only looked at the fill_in_the_dots answer sheet.

I have just done a cross over from Sail Canada to ASA. I have to do 214 (catamaran) separately, so I am going to Sausalito next week. So I am also studying. Any advise would be gratefully accepted.
I'd love to help, but I'm having enough trouble with one hull. Good luck on the test!

Re: ASA Coastal Nav Exam - HELP

The course line should have the course in true on top and the speed (from the knotmeter) on the bottom.
