IIRC, the dayshapes are supposed to be hoisted vertically in-line with each other in most cases, so a single halyard should be all that is needed.

Boasun You will decide on what you need. And if doubt check with the USCG Aux. They are usually very helpful about what is needed on board your vessel.
And an inspection sticker from them will show that you have passed the inspection for this year.

Boasun There shouldn't be any baskets in the rigging of any fishing boat. The baskets are no longer a day shape signal. Now it is two cones apexes together is the signal for fishing/trawling vessels. No matter the size of the vessel. This looks like a bow tie on its side.

But then it takes a lot of balls to run aground. Three of them that is...
So the count that we have to carry on the work boats is:
3 balls
1 diamond. two if you are a tug
1 cone for a sail boat
2 cones for fishing vessels
a halyard to hoist all of this stuff... Well for a max of three, hopefully ball, diamond, ball.

Oh! a square flag and a ball for distress. Like I am right now... hoping not to make any mistakes while putting this info out. Hate being caught in the wrong...Have to buy a round when I am.

gc1111 Remember this is in the context of a 42' ketch. I am sure every commercial craft and any pleasure boat with a hired crew will have and use the day shapes. But go into any recreational anchorage (not a "designated" area) and count the anchor balls you see hoisted. Or go to a fishermans dock and count the baskets in the rigging of docked boats. In this area, actual practice differs greatly from the rule book.

Who says that? Every vessel I've worked on carried and used the day shapes.

You better go back and read Inland Rules of the Road.
I know there is ignorance sailing out there. But PLEASE don't add to it.

gc1111 Dayshapes are basically not used in the US. But if you go foreign you will find them in widespread usage.

hellosailor Chuck, the day shapes are virtually unheard of on recreational boats. Check with the local USCG Auxiliary, they will come out and do a free local inspection for you. No penalty if they find anything wrong, and a "Go away, I already did it" sticker to put on the hull if you pass.
