sabre 28 mast step

Thanks. I have contacted Sabre several times in the past. Usually, in a case like this they advise me to contact a professional. Maybe that''s the right answer! In any case I''ll givd it a shot.

Sabre has a very good “after warranty” technical department that can answer this and other questions for you. They might be a better source for an answer you can "take to the bank" rather than this bulletin board.

sabre 28 mast step

I have a 1981 Sabre 28. I''ve noticed that the heel at the base of the mast is not centered with the mast extrusion. In fact the extrusion appears to extend beyond the heel by nearly the thickness of the extrusion on the port side (although you can''t see any light looking into the wiring access plate). It has never been possible to remove the single (stainless) bolt holding the heel in place since I''ve owned the boat (9 years). This year I tightened the front lower shrouds a little more than in past seasons (to get the 2" of bend that Sabre recommends) and heard a lot of "grinding/crunching" noise even when at the mooring. This noise went away when I loostened the front shrouds to a level that gave just the slightest bend.

Has anyone else seen this offset of the mast heel? How serious is it and could it explain the noise (it''s very hard to localized the source).

Bob Comstock
