Can the red button on engine controller flash?

A couple of weeks ago we chartered a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 32 (3 years old) in Croatia. As the last step of checking the boat we started the engine. It seemed OK, but when tried to stop it, suddenly huge amount of white smoke came out from where normally the cooling water goes out, followed by some black oil . They spent the whole afternoon repairing it, they said it's okay. Next day we left the harbour, started sailing, when the wind died, started the engine. After 10 minutes of motoring the same torture happened again (RPM up, white smoke, oil coming out). And here comes my question .
One member of the crew said, that when the engine broke down, he saw the red button on the controller flashing. Nobody else have seen it, and now we're waiting for your anwser to solve this myth :) .

And to end the story, we slowly sailed back to the marina, they towed us in, next day a volvo engineer spent a day with repairing our engine (again). After these issues we had a wonderful cruise, and the lost two days were compensated with a few bottles of croatian spirits by the company. ...would rather have choosen the two days of sailing :)

Thank you for your anwser, and better luck with charter-boat-engines!
