How old is the engine ? Looking at Yanmar's web site they say that all J Series engines have the water pump at the front of the engine not the back. You don't by any chance have one of those strange setups where the engine is actually installed backwards ? (No I'm not pulling your leg, it's a serious question.)

I am of the firm belief that all engineers and designers should be forced to work as service personnel on the devices they engineer/design for at least one year. Sorry, no good ideas for you.

caliber 40 impeller change

I have a caliber 40 with a Yanmar 46jh engine. I need to inspect/change the raw water impeller but it faces aft underneath the alternator on the port side and there is a solid wall right nest to the engine. Has anybody any advice on how to inspect and or change the impeller in this configuration. It appears to me that this is a very poor design and would take major engine disassembly to do this, not something that could be done at sea in an emergency. Any advice would be appreciated.
