Its one of the early roller reefing systems for a mainsail. Not very good and considered obsolete now. The other stuff you see was added later, after the boat was made.

Boom Gooseneck Swivels
As I put the Grampian 26 on the hard last week, I thought I'd do a few repairs. I'm refiting the boom and noticed it turns on it's axis through a geared
3/8" drive on each side. Turning the drive turns the gooseneck.
What is the purpose of this?
I'll take some photos if anyone would like.
