I have an IP27 with a 2GM20 Yanmar diesel. I've always had to push the start button 3 or 4 times to get the starter to engage. A friend also has the same boat and engine and he has the same problem. I believe he had the solenoid replaced and he still has the problem. It now seems to be getting worse. Any ideas?

check the wires and make sure the connections are clean. also check battery terminals, clean them even if they look ok. are the batteries in good condition?
The Batteries are fully charged and the terminals have been cleaned. I've had this problem the entire time I've owned the boat( 7 years). It has never failed to start, but my wife and I just came off of a week long cruise and got sick of the hassle.
Try a jumper cable directly from the battery to the starter terminal and see what happens. That will eliminate all the connections and wires in between.
Usually a sign of a poor connection. The solenoid would be in this catagory as well. Get a jumper cable and connect across the solenoid from large terminal to large terminal.(be prepared for a big spark and don't bump your head!) If this eliminates the problem, then replace the solenoid. If not, remove and clean all connections including the negative side.(esp the battery terminals)
This is the cheap check. If that fails, then the starter may need to be replaced or rebuilt.
There could be a bad wire or connection between the switch and the starter or a bad switch. I had a bad key switch on mine, I had to play with it to make it work. Try installing a toggle switch in place of the starter button and see how that works.
I had a similar problem with my Yanmar powered C&C. Some of the Yanmar engine control panels are a little different, but, on mine you had to turn a key switch, and then press a separate button switch to turn the engine over. The button switch has 2 wires connected to it. One of them is about 5" long and has a bullet connector on the end. Look behind the control panel and find that wire. Disconnect the bullet connector, clean it with a little fine emery or sandpaper, and clean the female connector as best you can. The other wire that leads from the button switch is connected to a terminal on the key switch. I cleaned the bullet connector and all those other connectors that are attached to that terminal on the key switch, and re-connected them. That might solve your problem. If not, trace the wire from the bullet connector to the starter, and clean any contacts along the way. In my case, I also had to replace the button switch (about $24.00), and it works fine, for the first time since I bought the boat.
Don't be intimidated by it. It really isn't difficult.
