TwentySeven I just saw this thread about Cascais and Estoril and I couldn't agree more with all the nice things you all say. In fact, one of the very few things my wife and I agree with is that we would love to end up living there. (Only that I would like to live in Cascais and she would prefer downtown Lisbon...).

But my reason to post here is that I know that the Marina de Cascais went through a crisis around 2000-2001. I fitst visit the Marina a couple of years after, when the problems were over and you could tell it was a splendid Marina. But if if's not diverting the sense of the thread, I would love to hear about Giu's perception of that crisis from his perspective as a boat owner, user of the Marina. Thanks,

RealityCheck I had the pleasure of visiting Estoril a number of times between 1979 and I think about 1985 when I worked for ITT who at that time had a semi-conductor factory in the area and later some other consumer electronics joint ventures.

Estoril is a very interesting and a nice looking place and as I primarily stayed at the Hotel Estoril Sol the views were very nice and I loved to take long drives on the weekends... except those darn people still drive on the wrong side of the street which I think I effectively corrected on a few round-abouts.

My strongest memory was that these people eat very late... I mean when I'm normally getting ready for bed!!! Went into restaurants at about 6 or 7 and they look at you very strangly... "real" people don't do that until some time between 9 PM and 1AM. But at 6 or 7 you can often have 10 or so waiters serving you.... think they replaced my fork every darn time I put it down!

I recalled the childhood story of the magpies baked in a pie... you know the one "4 and 20 black birds baked in a pie..." I didn't know it was based on an actually occurrence at I think it was a Moorish Castle just out side of Estoril. The Moorish influence on the area is unique and the views from many of them is breath taking.

Hope to return some day as I didn't get the chance to do more than take an occasional swim and some of the beaches out of town. I'll remember to take lots of photo disks this time... many of my photos have aged or been lost... would be nice to have the opportunity to make more.

Brezzin I had the opportunity to spend some time in Cascais earlier this year and I was blown away by town. Metropolitan yet still kept it's old world charm.
I am so ready to go back.

Joel73 We've already bought our plane tickets! We'll be in Europe for three weeks and we'll spend about 10 days in Portugal. London and Madrid will be fun but i'm most excited about our time exploring Lisboa and the southern coast... Sagres, Lagos and Faro. Still figuring it all out. Giu-i'll be at West Marine this weekend, should i pick up a grill for Giulietta?! What's that you say??? Bimini too??!

Giulietta As I said before, many many many times...any one here coming to visit, as long the intentions are good, is and will allways be welcome to my home and my boat.

We had 2 guys come here, ask them what they think. Bet you both are returning...and in fact, one of them is already "making reservations" for the ride South with Giulietta next year.

Coming next year, I'll invite a few more Sailnetters to ride with me. I'll announce it then.

Promise a close view of the cape..lets hope next year the wind also comes with us...

max-on You're welcome Giu; I knew you would post some photos that are more pleasing to the eye than in the 'other thread', although I have not clicked that link yet.

Now, you keep telling us how beautiful it is there, I expect a 'first rate' tour from you when Mechele and I, and the rest of your friends here, visit!
