Hi Ragdoll-saw your interest in Formosa 43. I don''t know too much about the 43, but we have a 47'' Formosa and love it. It is very well built, and although it was finished in Canada(no Taiwan stainless steel!) I imagine it represents the line of boats. Ours is a 1980- we just replaced the staysail, main and mizzen, and also bought lazy cradles instead of covers. I highly recoomend them. They are from UK Sails. Our boat has a fin keel and spade hung rudder. Ours has a Ford Lehman diesel85 hp, with 2500 hours and no probles, ''course I change the oils and trans fluid every 50 hours. The boat is very seakindly(in fact, even in rough seas 8-10'' swells and lumpy I have never been seasick) There is a Formosa 41'' down the docks from us, and I have spoken to the owner many times, his feeling is mutual about hiis boat. There is a lot of wood topsides and it keeps me quite busy. I recommend Cetol instead of varnish...very little maintanance and holds up well. The Formosas have a good reputation out here in California. If you can find one without teak decks grab it. After twenty years they start showing their age, and it seems as though I''m always repairing them, recaulking or something. I''ve heard horror stories about replacing them...upwards of ten thousand dollars. Hope this was of some help. Ragman

Seeking info on 1980 Formosa 43
Hi, I''m looking for info on a 1980 Formosa 43 sloop. Intentions are to cruise the ilands and do gunk holing in central and the North of South America. What kind of keel and what''s the draft? Need strong hull which is forgiving for gunk holing.
We know about the older Pearsons, Albergs, Allieds and Morgans they are overbuild. what about the Formosa 43.
