jim0123r as for the crewmember whom i had to fire - i didn't select him, and never would have in the beginning. if it had been my choice, i would indeed have covered any delay costs.

and thanks, charlie, for your input. charlie was one of those who was quick to respond to a similar deal (but airfare was included), and along with one other person, we enjoyed a fabulous 12 days to st. lucia and another three days in the owner's mansion on a hilltop.

strangers are just friends you haven't met yet. sometimes they turn into lifelong pals.

jim0123r thanks, camaderie, for backing me up. these weren't my terms from the beginning, but my boss's, and i was trying to stay within them.

i had about 20 persons respond, ready to accept these terms - i interviewed three of them extensively, while sharing my credentials and details about the boat. like you said, most of the candidates were competent sailors trying to build time toward a license, or semi-retired guys with or without boats, looking for an experienced and cooperative captain who might teach them some things while they gain the offshore experience they are looking for.

as for being nuts, i assure all of those skeptics that i am not. i have many references which i share with my prospective crewmembers. as for checking everything out to the last detail...sometimes time is of the essence, and those who wait for everything to be "perfect" get left at the dock while those who go on gut feelings from several e-mail and telephone interviews get to go on exciting adventures with considerate, cooperative crewmembers, eating well and being safe the whole way from great harbor to great harbor. better than sitting at a computer and fighting about whether some other member's terms are "acceptable" or not!

once again, camaderie, thank you for your support - i'm off to tahiti on tuesday with a fantastic crew!

genieskip I really disagree that the deal was unfair. What is unfair is when the terms are changed after agreement. The skipper was quite upfront. You pay to get to and from the boat and for your expenses in port. You get a hell of a trip, free food underway. Fifty years ago I would have jumped at the chance. If you don't like the conditions, no one is making you join up.

I've raced with skippers that took the crew to and from the starting location in private jets and I've sailed with skippers that asked the crew to chip in to provision. It takes all kinds and I never had any problems with the ones that were up front. If they were honest and truthful about the terms they were honest about everything else. Much better than the ones who said one thing and did another. I spent three months cruising in the Med once with terms similar to those listed above. Had a hell of a good time. The owner paid for my ticket home at the end, even though that was not part of the original deal.

bubb2 A while back, I had delivery where one of my guys (crew) had to have his gall bladder removed just days before we were to move a boat. I called the boat owner to tell him we were going to be late getting started. I did cover the new crew airline ticket and we 2 days late getting started. However, we passed up a night at marina and made up time underway and delivered the boat within hours of when we thought we would. Later, my sick guy wrote a letter to the airline and sent along a copy of the hospital bill. The airline refunded the cost of the ticket back to the boat owners credit card. In turn he reinbursed me for the cost of the new ticket. Things can work out even though it gets off to rough start.

That does change my thinking a little. He did the right thing letting the crew member go. As the Capt. though he is responsible to the boat owner for the crew members he picked. Then it is his responsibly to get the boat moving on schedule and if he has to dig into his own pockets to do so, so be it!

CharlesCook I sailed with Jim (jim0123r) on a 46' yacht from Fort Lauderdale to St. Lucia. He is a great guy and knows what he is doing. It sounded to me like he was ready to go and just needed to replace someone asap.
