Charter Boat purchasing

I just finished a Moorings Charter from St. Lucia to Grenada and I had the opportunity to talk with some fulltime cruisers at the docks in Secret Harbor, Grenada. Two had purchased Moorings Charter boats years before and they loved them. For them, they felt it was a good deal. Both their families lived on the boats. Great bunch of folks.

I know this is not what you are asking for but Cruising World (I think) did an article on the pros and cons of buying a new boat and putting into charter. The problem I see is that an average charter boat probably sees 40 (?) weeks of use per year. In addition, they are subjected to the heat and damaging effects of a tropical sun (typically). So, the chronologically 2 year old boat you are buying has the wear of a 5-7 year old boat. As such, they may seem cheap at first blush but really have had the salt taken out of them thru use and the weather. As for resale value, I would say that any knowledgeable buyer will ask if the boat has been in charter and take an appropriate discount.

Charter Boat purchasing

I''ve been combing the libraries and internet looking for some additional information on purchasing a boat that was in the charter business. I have read several articles on the pros and cons of purchasing a boat that has been in a reputable charter fleet. What I have not read is what is the resale value of a boat like this after you have purchased it? Anyone out there know the answer? The logic I''m using is that if I maintain this boat in the condition that I purchased it, as well as upgrading her systems as needed, that she will retain her value. Have I missed something? Looking forward to your responses.
John
