captainjay Ok,
I went to Tortola yesterday and looked at the boats. The Beneteau got sold but it is just as well as I didn't want to take on the repairs. I did look a Jeanneau Sun Oddessy that we are real interested in. It is in need of TLC but has no major issues. I have the benefit of a full survey and sea trial done at a previous buyers expense.
What are the opinions of the boat. We will be using it for weekends around the Virgins and a week or two cruise a couple of times a year. The boat is very basic in systems. 12 V Plate fridge. Almost nonexist 110. It has a shore power cord wired directly to a charger, installed by the charter company to keep the batteries topped off at the dock. The boat was a bare boat charter boat for five years then the owner has used it six months a year for the last three years. It has the normal cosmetic issue you would expect based on its age.
Also the yanmar has 6000 hours on it. How does this stack up. The transmision was replaced three years ago. Sails are average. The jib needs some repair to the sail cover.
I can buy the boat for $20000 less than the current survey value.

It wasn't a full survey. It was a condition report done by a surveyor. I don't know if it was done for the owner or a potential buyer. The report is almost six months old and the boat hasn't sold. The price just got a lot cheaper. The broker says this is fairly common damage for this boat. They don't beleive it has been grounded. I plan to go over to Tortola to look at the boat and a full survey would be in order if I were to make an offer. I mainly wanted to know if anyone knew of this problem showing up. The boat is currently in the water so it will be interesting to see how fresh the damge looks.

sailingdog Sounds like your boat had a pretty serious grounding.. not good.

Hairline cracks in the IGU, near keel bolts, broken tabbing that had been repaired and broken again... crack in the pan of the keel support area... all point to a bad grounding with some serious structural issues. Was the surveyor theirs... and how recent does the damage look, it might well be post survey.

Haven't posted in a while. I got an email from a broker today about a Beneteau. It has been a charter boat and in need of TLC. It had a condition report done by a good surveyor in December and has some issues. Most of them are normal for it's age and history. The boat is priced very aggresively. Does any one have any info on this boat. It is a 1993 model. The big issue/unknown is per the surveyor's condition report:

Intergal Grid Unit
IGU (Hairline cracks)
At a few transverse to longitudinal junctions.
At the centre of the transverse floor section & crack in pan (aft keel
Adjacent to a number of keel bolts.
Inboard area of shower tray.
A previous fiberglass tabbing repair is partly detached (aft keel area).

Any feed back or informatiowould be appreciated.
