Lucky Jack Gents,

Thanks for the feedback guys. Especially from Giu, as that was interesting stuff. By the way Giu, pass my thanks on to your Portuguese bretheren for concocting Madiera as I have recently discovered how interesting that can be - another wonderful Portuguese contribution to seafaring!

I must say that I planned to depart from my home port on Thursday the 12th purely in the spirit of keeping with tradition and superstition (and having fun with it). I won't lose any sleep because I'll be leaving a temporary stop on Friday the 13th for my destination, but I was curious to see how this was interpreted by other sailors.

My question was an effort to find out if the superstition refers only to your initial cruise departure, or does it regard "any" sort of departure on a Friday.

XTR I did a delivery from Red Hook to Chesapeake in April of 07. We sailed on Friday. Had we waited till Saturday we would have been caught in the teeth of that front that took out 4 boats the day after we made the bridge-tunnel. Friday not a problem for me.

bubb2 Boasun, If your last post was directed at me. (prop wash) Please be assured that my earlier post was just bad attempt at humor. I to have been in situation's where I have said a Prayer. (I never let the crew know) If I ask the crew to start Praying then we are in real trouble.

Boasun superstitions; Are when incidences are coupled with occurances of what happens shortly afterwards.
bad luck for example;
You can whistle up a storm.
Sail on Friday.
Carry your gear in black luggage.

Good luck;
Becalmed? Stick a knife in the mast in the direction of wind you want to blow.

There are probably a few more for sailors and I can think of one or two for actors. Such as never wish them luck or put a hat on a bed.

Now some of you think this is all prop wash, but there are an aweful lot of people that do believe in this superstitions. Now I'm not superstitious myself but have been known to say a prayer or two under certain interesting conditions while sailing. Hey! Prayers do work!! Considering the age of the vessels I have worked on, the sea conditions I have sailed in and the close proximity that I had to be in many cases to life threatening conditions. From War to fires on board and flooding of the vessels... Storms are acts of God and there you need to depend on the your faith and God's will to see you through.
Then there are some of you who don't think so.
Recommend that you stay home and hide in your closet.

sgkuhner I for one am very superstitious and will NEVER leave port on a Friday for a major passage. When I was working we would always get on Tamure Friday evening and then leave the mooring for Maine just after midnight. Now let me tell you a story of when we were in Bora Bora on our circumnavigation. We were at the dance contest the night of Fete and as the dancers were off for a break, the guy next to me asked if we were going to Suvarov after Bora Bora. I said yes we were. He said, "great lets go together." "Sure that would be fun," I said, "when do you want to leave?" "Lets go day after tomorrow" was his reply. "Fine," I said, "But wait that is Friday!" He looked at me inquisitively and asked, "SO?" "Don't you know it is bad luck to leave on a Friday?" I responded "you're not superstitious are you?" he asked. "I sure am" I said. "Well I'm not and we are ready to go on Friday; so I guess we will just meet you there."

He left on Friday and that night a BIG unannounced front came through and blew 60 kts for three days. On the fourth day, he came powering back through the pass....without his mast! Let me tell you he will never leave port on a Friday again!! here is a picture of him as he anchored back in the lagoon of Bora Bora.
