I have not been on it. I read a book on it when I was considering the trip. You DO have to remove the mast.

Have you taken this route? We draft 5''10" with mast height 50'' above the water. Would we have to drop our mast? What is the downside of this route?

Yep, through Chicago into the Illinois river, and into the Ten Tom river system (parallel''s the Mississippi)

What are some of the options for sailing from the Great Lakes to warm weather. It seems most people I talk to go the Erie Canal route and a few take the St Lawrence. Are there other options?
