sailingdog I'd glass over the hole if you can... starboard is nice as a cosmetic material but a lousy structural material, and a large hole like that probably does weaken the bulkhead a bit. Then, when you've closed off most of the hole, do what Cam suggests, which makes mounting the compass really easy, but also makes maintaining it simple too. The starboard mounting plate will also make getting the compass square to your hull, so that the compass reads properly, easier.

When I installed the opening port in my bulkhead, I laminated in some 3/8" plywood and also epoxied the interior fiberglass liner to the area the port is in. That was done to restore most of the strength that cutting a 5" x 13" hole in my bulkhead took away.

Iflyka200s Good point!

Sailorman (the local marine bone yard) sells scraps of starboard too!

camaraderie How about a nice piece of Starboard through bolted with the compass mounted into the starboard. This would cover the hole and give a nice finished look.

New Compass mounting...

I did a search but don't see the exact answer I need....

The circa 1980 Airpath that came on my Catalina 22 (even though covered) fell apart (literally)

I pulled it out and picked up an E.S. Ritchie.

The problem:

Some crack smoker hacked a hole in my bulkhead that would make an 8 year-old with a sawzall proud..... i.e. its 3-4 times larger than the required for the new compass...

How should I patch that hole?

Marine plywood, west epoxied in... covered with fiberglass mat?

Any and all thoughts are welcome!
